5 Most Unusual High Schools In Sweden

Upper secondary school (gymnasium) in Sweden lasts for three years. The education is optional, but free, and follows after nine years in elementary school.

Many of us were educated in traditional classrooms learning maths or Latin, but the same cannot be said for the students at these unusual high schools. Learn about them today.

1.  New Circus School
A unique collaboration between S:t Botvids Gymnasium and famous Cirkus Cirkör where you can study acrobatics, jugling, trampolining or tightrope walking.

2. Adventure Guide Programme
In this school in Älvdalen, you can learn rafting, skiing, kayaking, canoeing, driving a snowmobile and climbing, but also how to use nature as a resource in a sustainable manner.

3. Orienteering Programme
No fewer than five schools offer an education in this popular Swedish sport that requires navigational skills and using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in usually unfamiliar terrain, all whilst moving at speed. The school in Mora even offers mountain bike orienteering!

4. Sailing School
Sailing School in Öckerö is not only a school of sailing (and maritime transport), but also a school that – sails. According to their curriculum, some classes are supposed to sail to Lisabon and Cadiz, some to Barcelona and Malaga, while some are going to end up in Bermuda and Miami!

5. “Introduction” School
Sweden is an inclusive society. Therefore, this education is specially adapted to fit students who have ADHD or Asperger’s.
